Arianna Huffington Thinks Universities Are Asking the Wrong Question About AI
The debate has settled on whether students will still learn to think, which she argues concedes that thinking is all a university was ever for.
The argument about artificial intelligence in higher education has narrowed to a single groove. In a world where machines can think, how do we make sure students still learn to think.
Arianna Huffington's objection is not that the question is unimportant. It is that it rests on an assumption nobody has examined, which is that developing intelligence is the only purpose of a university.
What has gone missing from the debate, she argues, are the qualities that actually distinguish people: curiosity, the search for meaning, inner growth. Those are not extracurricular. They are a core part of what an education was supposed to be.
She frames the choice facing universities in two words. Information, or formation.
The word used to mean something else
The etymology is doing real work in her argument. Education descends from the Latin educare, meaning to nourish or to bring out. At its root it was never about filling a mind with facts, but about drawing out and nourishing what is already there.
Universities understood their remit that way from their medieval beginnings. The thirteenth-century theologian Thomas Aquinas described the mission as capax universi, the formation of the whole person.
That ambition narrowed over the centuries, and the most fundamental questions about the meaning of a life were gradually expelled from the classroom.
Which is why Huffington reads the current moment differently from most people writing about it. Some see AI as a threat to be managed. She sees a forcing function: an opportunity to rebuild higher education around the broader scope it used to have.
Offloading cognition can lead to offloading the appetite for wonder
When answers are free, questions get expensive
The logic is straightforward once stated. If a technology can supply an instant answer to any question, the answer stops being the scarce thing and the question becomes it.
People are born curious. Aristotle put it that all men by nature desire to know. One study found that pre-school children ask roughly 100 questions a day, and that the rate collapses as they get older, effectively disappearing by middle school.
Curiosity is one of the few defining human traits AI cannot reproduce, and it behaves like a muscle. It grows with use. The point is not only finding answers but seeking growth, and curiosity is the precursor both to good questions and to whatever wisdom follows them.
The real risk is not cheating
This is where Huffington's argument separates from the standard anxiety about students using chatbots to write essays.
The danger, as she sees it, is not outsourcing the search for answers. It is outsourcing the generation of the questions.
Sitting with a mystery, working through ambiguity, tolerating the discomfort of not yet understanding something, can now be dispensed with by typing a prompt. Offload the cognition often enough and you may offload the appetite for wonder along with it.
That is a harder problem than plagiarism, because nothing about it looks like misconduct. A student who never develops the habit of sitting with a difficult question has broken no rule.
What a university could actually do
Her proposal is concrete, which is more than most contributions to this argument manage.
If the capacity to ask questions, and more importantly the desire to ask them, is now a core skill, then teach it directly. Make question-asking rather than answer-giving the explicit goal of a course. Build a first-year seminar entirely around inquiry.
And grade students on the quality of the questions they learn to pose, not on the answers.
That last suggestion is the one worth arguing about, because it inverts every assessment structure a university currently operates. It is also the only proposal on the table that a machine capable of answering anything cannot quietly render pointless.
